Oli’s Story
Oli was diagnosed with cancer when he was in kindergarten, which required long hospital stays and five rounds of chemotherapy. When the cancer came back in 2024, Oli underwent a bone marrow transplant to help him grow more healthy blood cells and overcome his cancer relapse. He now celebrates a second birthday in August in recognition of the day he was given this life-saving procedure. Oli’s cancer treatment was a lengthy process that left him feeling overwhelmed, so like the true foodie that he is, Oli decided to replace the complex names of his medications with the names of his favorite foods and even made posters to help his nurses keep track of it all. It became tradition for Oli to celebrate the end of a treatment with his favorite meal from Chipotle.
The Doernbecher Freestyle Program
Earlier this year, Oli was selected to participate in Doernbecher Freestyle, a unique partnership between NIKE, Inc. and OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital that began in 2004 that has raised $44 million (and counting) for the hospital since its inception.
With these contributions, kids can receive the care they need at Doernbecher to reach their greatest potential. Powering the program are employee volunteers, who combine their product design and development expertise with the kids’ unique joys of life to create one-of-a-kind designs. Each year, the program gives six OHSU Doernbecher patients the opportunity to create inspiring Nike footwear designs that are sold at retail to benefit the hospital as a signature fundraiser.
At the annual auction where the retail Doernbecher Freestyle footwear designs were revealed, Nike surprised each participating patient with a second custom pair of shoes designed especially for them and the highest auction bidder.
The Fresh Details on Oli’s Custom Nike Air Force 1
Oli's volunteer design team added personalized design elements for Oli’s custom shoe that encapsulate his journey, while expressing his passion for Chipotle.
- On the shoe’s heel tab, the text “Oli’s Order #572” is imprinted, commemorating the 572 laps—equal to a marathon—that Oli walked around the oncology inpatient unit at Doernbecher during his treatment.
- A tag attached to the inner tongue details Oli’s exact Chipotle order.
- The sneaker’s sock liner design is inspired by Chipotle’s iconic to-go bag.
- The slogan “Chipotle is My Life” is embossed onto the rubber outsole of the shoe, which is brown to parallel the colors of Chipotle’s napkins and to-go bags.
- The lateral heel features Chipotle’s timeless logo surrounded by silver patent leather reminiscent of Chipotle’s foil.
- The iconic Nike Swoosh comes in green, a nod to Chipotle’s beloved guac that Oli adds to every order.
- The shoe was packaged in a custom box shaped like a Chipotle burrito bowl and features Chipotle’s classic utensils with a Nike-inspired twist.
- While this custom Nike Air Force 1 was made specifically for non-commercial use, the retail version of Oli’s foodie-forward Air Force 1 will be available on the SNKRS App and at select retail locations this winter.
